1.       First, you’ll want to remove all screens so that you are able to fully access the track. 

2.       Using a vacuum with a hose attachment (preferably the crevice tool attachment), vacuum up all of the loose dirt and dust in the track. 

3.       You should have a bucket handy with a mixture of water and a mild cleaning solution so that you can dampen your cleaning rag and clean off the grime from the tracks as you go.  Dip your cleaning cloth in the soapy solution and wipe down the track.  

4.       If you have a build-up of dirt and grime, you’ll want to use a window track cleaning brush, dipped in the cleaning solution to scrub the track.  If you do not have a window track cleaning brush, a toothbrush will suffice.  Once you’ve fully scrubbed the track, wipe clean with the damp cloth. If, after using the brush to scrub the track you still have a build-up of dirt or grime that you are unable to clear up, you can use a putty knife to scrape away at the grime. Again, follow up by wiping down the surface with a clean cloth.

Frequency

Cleaning your window and sliding door tracks is not something you need to add to your weekly or even monthly cleaning list.  However, if you try to clean them on a quarterly basis, you will find that they are much easier to maintain over time.
