How to clean your California Shutters

There are several fantastic window treatments on the market, but California Shutters seem to be one of the most popular choices for homeowners these days.  Simple yet stylish, they complement most interior design options and even improve a home’s resale value. Several of our customers here in Oakville have made the switch to California Shutters, but after having them installed, question how to keep their shutters looking as good as new over time.

In today’s blog, we will discuss ways to clean and maintain your window treatment investment.  More specifically, California Shutters.

First and foremost, you’ll want to add your shutters to your list of weekly household cleaning chores.  If you vacuum your shutters on a weekly basis, it will make overall maintenance of the shutters much easier as grime is less likely to build up.  Many vacuums have a brush attachment that you can use for the cleaning process.  Using a brush attachment will save you time and grab more dust and dirt from the shutters. 

On a weekly or bi-weekly basis, you can incorporate a dusting cloth to your shutter cleaning maintenance routine to provide a deeper clean and reach any spaces that the vacuum may have missed.  We find that microfiber cloths are a great option for dusting shutters.  The key is to take your time and gently dust both sides of each louver, keeping an eye out for any dirt or stubborn marks on the surface of the louvers as you go.

If you find that you have some grime or stubborn marks that require a bit more effort than just dusting, you can spot clean the area with a clean cloth dampened with a bit of water.  Distilled water is a wise choice as it won’t leave spots on the shutters.  If you have wooden shutters, it is crucial that you wipe the louver dry with an absorbent cloth immediately after spot cleaning in order to avoid warping the wood.
